Kanlaon unrest triggers flight cancellations

Several flights from Manila bound to Visayas cities were cancelled Tuesday, June 4, amid the ongoing volcanic activity of Mount Kanlaon, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has announced.

NAIA said Cebu Pacific, Air Asia and Philippine Airlines’ PAL Express released separate advisories, informing travelers of changes in their flight schedules following the eruption of Mount Kanlaon on Monday evening, June 3.

As of 7:20 AM on Tuesday, NAIA said the following flights have been cancelled:

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Alert Level 2 remains over Mount Kanlaon, which had a six-minute explosive eruption on Monday evening. It registered at least 43 volcanic earthquakes based on the latest monitoring of the state seismic agency.

Kanlaon is an active andesitic stratovolcano that straddles between the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Negros Island Region. It is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Bacolod City.
