Go highlights essential role of cooperatives in community development

Senator Christopher Lawrence Go emphasized on Sunday the crucial role of cooperatives in communities, especially in areas facing geographical and economic hardships, where collective efforts can make a substantial difference.

Go issued the statement during the recent ‘Malasakit sa Kooperatiba’ (Compassion in Cooperatives) program spearheaded by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) with the support of the senator.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Cooperatives, Go emphasized the significance of government support for the cooperatives’ growth and development. He highlighted the need for sustained assistance to ensure the prosperity and resilience of these organizations.

In the 2024 budget, Go advocated for increased funding for the CDA’s Human Capital Development Program for Cooperatives. This includes financial assistance of P 50,000 per micro or small cooperative under the ‘Malasakit sa Kooperatiba’ program.

The senator has been a staunch advocate for cooperative development. He is the co-author and co-sponsor of Republic Act No. 11502, or the National Cooperative Month Act, which designates October as the National Cooperative Month every year.

Go also co-authored and co-sponsored RA 11535, a law mandating the appointment of a Cooperatives Development Officer at the municipal, city, and provincial levels.

Meanwhile, in an interview held in Tanauan City, Batangas, Go called on the public to prioritize their safety amid the onset of rainy season. He also reminded government agencies to ensure they are prepared in responding to potential calamities.

“Let us keep safe. Diseases are spreading, it’s the season of floods. So, I am appealing to our Department of Health that you must always be prepared. There must be medicines ready in the evacuation centers,” Go stated in Tagalog.
