Lady Altas, Blazers soft netters crowned champs

The Perpetual Help Lady Altas swept the double-round eliminations to capture the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 women’s soft tennis crown on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Court in Malate, Manila.

The Las Pinas City-based soft netters, were led by national player Christy Sañosa, with help from teammates Cindy Nuguit, Lyke Lei Sañosa, Liminiree Caylaluad and Aira Nuguit.

The Lady Altas defeated San Beda University Lady Red Lioness, 2-1, in the second round to win the crown this year and dethrone the Mendiola team from its perch.

After 13 years, the NCAA soft tennis crown is back in Perpetual Help’s hands.

In the men’s division, the College of St. Benilde Blazers clinched the crown after defeating the Perpetual Help soft netters in the finals, 5-4, 0-4, 4-1.

The CSB team is composed of Joseph Gadon, Carlos Santiago, Andrew Garcia Jr., Jibril Perpetua, Sherwin Villacorte and Pete Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, Bacoor native, 4th year HRM coed Christy Sañosa was adjudged as the season’s Most Valuable Plater.

“I’m very proud to represent my alma mater here in the NCAA at nakapagbigay ako, kasama ang team ko, ng karangalan sa Perpetual before we graduate with Cindy Nuguit,” Sañosa said.

Her teammate Liminiree Caylaluad was named Freshman of the Year and coach Samuel Nuguit was adjudged Coach of the Year, while Angela Valdez of SBU was awarded the Rookie of the Year.

In the men’s division, Carlos Santiago of CSB was named Season MVP and Rookie of the Year, while his mentor John Rey Moreno picked up the Coach of the Year award. Leyron Bernardo of Perpetual Help was named Freshman of the Year.
