The Civil Aviation Authority Philippines (CAAP) has partnered with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) to increase the number of airplane movements at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
This comes after the operations and management of the Philippines’ premier airport were recently awarded to a private company.
CAAP Director General Manuel Tamayo and Deputy Director General for Administration Danjun Lucas met with Hong Kong CAD Chief Air Traffic Control Officer Samuel Ng to discuss methods for reasonably increasing the number of airplane movements per hour.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed CAAP to increase airplane movements at NAIA to 48 per hour, in line with the goal of doubling passenger capacity at the airport.
At present, airplane movements are limited to 40 to 42 per hour due to infrastructure constraints.
To achieve the goal, CAAP has already initiated measures to increase airplane movements, including visiting the air traffic facilities at Hong Kong airport to learn from its best practices.
San Miguel Group was announced recently as the winning bidder for the P171 billion contract to rehabilitate, operate, and maintain NAIA.
The SMC SAP Company Consortium, comprising San Miguel Holdings Corp., RMM Asian Logistics Inc., RLW Aviation Development Inc., and Incheon International Airport Corp., offered the highest bid of 82.16 percent revenue share to the government.
The NAIA project involves capital investment to improve the airport’s facilities to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other international standards.
The concessionaire will be responsible for both landside and airside operations of the NAIA, enhancing compliance, safety, security, and capacity to cater to increasing air traffic.
