This year, the three-time defending champion National University Bulldogs won’t be letting their guards down in the coming Season 86 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s volleyball tournament.
This is because coach Dante Alinsunurin believes that their rivals will be much stronger, and the Bulldogs must therefore be better this time around.
“Mas pinagbutihan pa namin ang preparation. Ito ay para maka-four-peat kami,” said Alinsunurin.
The Bulldogs will be aiming for a fourth straight title as volleyball action begins this Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Bulldogs took the men’s title via a 16-game sweep of Season 85. They have been unbeaten for 34 matches since their second game back in 2019.
Alinsunurin, who is on his 13th year with the squad, will have his next team built around Joshua Retamar and Nico Almendras, who are stepping up as their new leaders.
Retamar, the reigning Best Setter, is staying put with the Bulldogs with Almendras, after three other veterans have graduated.
“‘Yun ‘yung nagiging dahilan kung bakit nagiging maayos ‘yung takbo ng team eh dahil sa leadership nu’ng dalawa,” added Alinsunurin.
The Bulldogs will have their first game on Sunday against season 85 finals’ opponent University of Santo Tomas at 12 noon at the MOA Arena.
The UST Tigers will be coached again by Odjie Mamon, who steered them to the finals with their 11-3 win-loss slate in the eliminations, after getting past Far Eastern University in the Final Four.
