Over 150 participants attended the recently concluded EU-Philippines Partnership Conference, conducted by the International Trade Centre (ITC), in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the European Union (EU) delegation to the Philippines.
The conference, held as part of the DTI’s prestigious Philippines National Exporters’ Week in the last quarter of 2023, and within the framework of the EU-funded ARISE Plus Philippines project, attracted national and international experts, influential private sector leaders, and industry professionals who convened to explore the profound impact of embracing digitalization.
The conference’s primary focus was to illuminate the immense potential of digital transformation in elevating the competitiveness of Philippine micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). It delved into the opportunities and challenges faced by Philippine businesses, especially in key markets like the EU.
“Our MSMEs, which are the backbone of the Philippine economy, must adapt to the changing global environment, particularly digitalization. The discussions at this event will empower MSMEs with a greater understanding and appreciation for digitalization while providing a platform to connect with vital players and enablers in the digital economy,” DTI Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo said.
For his part, Prosperna a Philippine tech company dedicated to empowering one million Philippine MSMEs with accessible eCommerce software, through chief executive Dennis Velasco is optimistic of the country’s digital industry.
“I never imagined that the government, organizations, and the tech community would unite to drive digitalization in our country. It’s amazing to witness, and I believe it will create boundless opportunities for the Philippines. What’s crucial now is action – to empower and incentivize MSMEs to choose locally made technology platforms, fostering our circular economy.”
Digital transformation, the integration of digital technology into various business aspects, is a catalyst for innovation, competitiveness, and growth.
Beyond these advantages, it has emerged as a potent driver for sustainability and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This transformation offers the potential to revolutionize MSMEs, significantly enhancing their competitiveness and promoting sustainability and green business practices.
“Philippine MSMEs could harness the opportunities presented by digital transformation and the country’s green transformation. With its youthful demographic, renewable energy resources, and more, the Philippines is ripe for MSMEs to engage in business with the EU, promote economic development, integrate into the global economy, and alleviate poverty,” EU Delegation Head of Trade Philipp Dupuis said.
Sakahon chief executive Elaine Timbol, one of the featured MSME speakers said the future for digitalization in the Philippines is very bright.
“There are numerous opportunities for the agricultural sector, the least digitalized sector in the Philippines,” Timbol said.
Giga Natural Products president Peping de Villa encouraged all MSMEs to embrace digitalization, emphasizing its key role in improving various aspects of business, including sales.
The conference encompassed three enlightening sessions, each delving into critical aspects of Philippine digital transformation, including opportunities, challenges, policymaking, and sustainability.
Distinguished experts, including Donald P. Lim, CEO of DITO CME, and ITC experts MJacques Bughin and Colette van Der Ven, shared invaluable insights.
Select Philippine MSMEs took center stage in each session, presenting their business stories and participating in panels. Their invaluable perspectives enriched the discussions and provided firsthand insights into the small business landscape.
Each session fostered engaging panel discussions, featuring digital economy leaders from the private and public sectors, including European representatives and the European Commission.
This event aligns with a comprehensive capacity-building and advisory activities framework driven by ARISE Plus Philippines. It underscores the unwavering commitment of the DTI, the EU, and ITC to promote digitalization in the Philippines, setting the stage for a transformative era in Philippine business.
