Senator Pia Cayetano on Monday was elected chairperson of the Senate Committee on Accountability of Public Officials and Investigations, or the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.
Cayetano replaces Senator Francis Tolentino, who stepped down to prepare for his reelection bid in the 2025 midterm polls.
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said Cayetano is the first female chairperson of the Blue Ribbon Committee in the Senate’s 106 years of existence.
“We are very honored that Senator Pia Cayetano is the new chairperson,” he said.
Majority Floor Leader Joel Villanueva said senators from the majority bloc moved to elect her.
“We are in receipt of the resignation of Senator Tolentino, dated Jan. 22, 2024,” Villanueva said.
Cayetano, the older sister of Senator Allan Peter Cayetano, is also chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III said the minority applauds the decision of the majority. “We congratulate our first-ever female chairperson of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee,” he said.
