Department of National Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. on Friday paid tribute to Dr. Jose Rizal ahead of today’s celebration of the national hero’s 127th death anniversary.
Teodoro remembered Dr. Rizal “as a visionary and a true patriot who fought for the independence of the country against the Spanish during the colonial period.”
“Dr. Jose Rizal was a visionary and patriot who chose to fight for our nation’s freedom through words and ideals. His courage and sacrifice inspired others to join the fight for our independence,” he said.
On Rizal Day, the Defense chief also reminded Filipinos of the duty and responsibility for the sovereignty and sovereign rights of every individual in the Philippines.
“Today, may every Filipino be reminded of our shared duty and responsibility to uphold our sovereignty and sovereign rights as citizens of this nation,” Teodoro said.
“Let us embody our national hero’s unwavering love for the Philippines and remain united in protecting our hard-earned peace and independence,” he added.
The secretary pointed out that love for the country “in hearts and minds will uphold the honor and courage of every person.” “May the flame of love for the country remain in our hearts and minds and uphold the honor and courage of the Filipino.” the Defense chief said.
