Eugene Domingo, Pokwang extend playful invitation to Vilma Santos for ‘Becky and Badette’ premiere

Comediennes Eugene Domingo and Pokwang are playfully urging Vilma Santos to attend the premiere of their film Becky and Badette, an official entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

As devoted fans of the Star for All Seasons, the duo has called upon their idol to witness the cinematic offering by the IdeaFirst Company at the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival.

“Sana Ate Vi, please, kung may time ka sa Dec. 21 (premiere night). Baka may time ka (manood).” Meanwhile, Pokwang added, “Manonood din kami ng When I Met You in Tokyo parang tawiran ganern para magkatulungan.”

A highlight of Becky and Badette is a scene where Uge and Pokie pay homage to the performances of Christopher De Leon and Ate Vi in the 1982 film Relasyon. The film, as described by director Jun Robles Lana, serves as a heartfelt tribute not only to Vilma Santos and her contributions but also to other icons such as Sharon Cuneta, Maricel Soriano, and Dolphy.

“When you watch Becky and Badette, you’ll be surprised that Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos plays a significant role in the characters’ lives. It’s in the script. There’s a reason why you’ll see Ate Vi as a big part of the film. Many scenes are being re-enacted, and it’s crucial to the story. Besides that, it’s a love letter to Philippine cinema,” the director noted.

Meanwhile, recounting their friendship, Eugene shared the story of how they met during the Clown in a Million contest in 2004. Pokie, a standout contestant, left a lasting impression on Eugene, who initially thought Pokwang was gay.

“I first saw Pokie during that show. I was invited to speak to the remaining contestants, and she truly stood out. I commented that she’s naturally funny, even without engaging in conversation; she exudes fun. It was only later that I realized, ‘Oh, she’s a girl?’ And she emerged winner,” the seasoned actress and comedienne recalled.

“Uge is a giver,” Pokwang described her friend. “She’ll go along with your ideas. She knows what will work well or what will turn out beautifully. For example, when I come up with a punchline, she’ll go along with it, and the outcome becomes even better. She also contributes input to Director Jun.”

In the movie, Eugene and Pokwang team up again (they first worked together in 2006) as two high school best friends who navigate life’s challenges through a series of hilarious misadventures.

Joining them in the movie are Romnick Sarmenta, Agot Isidro, Adrian Lindayag, Angie Castrence, Peewee O’Hara, with special appearances by Iza Calzado, Sunshine Dizon, Karylle, Empoy, Moira dela Torre, Christian Bables, Janice de Belen, Gladys Reyes, Sheryn Regis, Sharlene San Pedro, Timothy Castillo, Joross Gamboa, Sigrid Bernardo, Via Antonio, and Ice Seguera.

Becky and Badette opens in cinemas nationwide this Dec. 25.
