Honda taps Skye to install solar rooftop system

Solar power developer Skye Renewables Philippines Inc. (Skye) will build and operate a rooftop solar system at Honda Philippines Inc.’s manufacturing site in Tanauan, Batangas.

The parties said in a statement the rooftop solar power generation venture would help elevate the energy landscape in the Philippines.

The 1.057-megawatt solar rooftop system should generate about 15 gigawatt-hours of renewable power over the life of the contract.

This aligns with Honda’s sustainability ambitions and will significantly directly reduce the carbon intensity of their operations. Honda said that by prioritizing sustainability and innovation, it is setting an example for other companies to follow.

The transition to clean, solar energy is a significant step in the global movement against climate change.
“We are truly honored to have been selected by Honda to be their solar partner in Philippines. Our development partner, Idemitsu Kosan Co., has worked with Honda for many years, so we are delighted to add energy-as-a-service to this enduring relationship,” Skye’s head for the Philippines Gary Espino said.

Skye develops solar systems in partnership with Idemitsu Kosan, a Japanese diversified energy group.

Honda Philippines president Sayaka Arai-Hattori said the agreement is a milestone “because Honda has taken the initiative in the environmental commitment to realize carbon neutrality for all Honda products and corporate activities by 2050.”

The parties said the rooftop solar power generation project is an indication of the growing importance of sustainable energy solutions. It shows the decreased reliance on fossil fuels that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner atmosphere, healthier planet and a greener future, they said.

Skye Renewables is company with operations in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.
