Surigao quake casualties rise to 3—NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday the reported fatalities due to the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur increased to three.

It said in its latest bulletin the fatalities were reported in Davao and Caraga regions. It also logged 48 injured individuals and 528,203 people or 132,615 families affected in Davao, Caraga and Northern Mindanao regions.

The NDRRMC said of the affected population, 28 people, or eight families, were staying in an evacuation center, and 23 persons, or six families, were taking shelter in other places.

Authorities also evacuated 1,845 individuals, or 447 families, in Davao Region.

The tremor left 3,887 houses damaged —3,583 partially and 304 totally. The damage to infrastructure was initially assessed at P4.81 million.

Hurdles in the communication lines were experienced in 19 areas, while water supply issues were reported in one area in Caraga.

Surigao del Sur province declared a state of calamity Tuesday.

The NDRRMC said the government extended P3,935,406 in assistance to earthquake victims so far.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur Saturday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The earthquake, occurred at 10:37 p.m. at a depth of 25 kilometers, with the epicenter traced 30 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan town.
