Estabillo, Araja bag PAO awards

Veteran journalist Rollie Estabillo of the Manila Standard was awarded the 2023 Outstanding Publisher in recognition of his significant contributions to nation-building during the 5th National Convention of the Rank and File Employees of the Public attorney’s Office held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on Oct. 11.

Manila Standard reporter Rio N. Araja was also named as one of the 2023 Outstanding Reporters for her “remarkable contribution to journalism” in almost three decades.

In 2022, PAO also cited Araja as an “Outstanding Reporter.”

Last Sept. 30, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, led by its president Arsenio Evangelista, and Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos also gave Araja a special recognition award for her invaluable support to fight corruption and promote good governance.

In 2019, Araja received the Dangal ng Natatanging Filipino award.

Estabillo, for his part, has been re-elected chairman and president of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI), the national association of newspapers in the country.

He challenged the PPI members to retool, embrace change, and accept the future of journalism.

Aside from media practioners, also awarded during the event was Senator Christopher Go who was recognized “Outstanding Senator.”

In his speech, Go thanked the rank and file employees of PAO, describing them as unsung heroes.

He also received on behalf of former President Rodrigo Duterte the “Outstanding President” award.
