Senator Juan Edgardo Angara donated 10 motorcycle units to the
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Friday in support of the
agency’s Motorcycle Riding Academy, set to open on Sept. 27.
The academy provides comprehensive training on motorcycle riding,
including theoretical and practical aspects, emergency response, road
courtesy, discipline, and traffic rules.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes and Angara signed a deed of donation and
acceptance held at the agency’s head office in Pasig City. It was
witnessed by MMDA Deputy Chairman Usec. Frisco San Juan Jr. and
General Manager Procopio Lipana
“I would like to extend my earnest gratitude to Sen. Angara for his
generous donation to the agency,” Artes said during the turnover
ceremony.
Artes also acknowledged the contributions of Angara for several
projects of the agency, which include the purchase of 50-seater
air-conditioned ferry boats to supplement the current fleet of the
Pasig River Ferry Service; the procurement of CCTV cameras and garbage
traps; and enabling the necessary funding for the expansion of the
agency’s Communications and Command Center.
Government Service Insurance System president and general manager Jose
Arnulfo Veloso already gave the MMDA the go-ahead to use for one year
the 5,977-square-meter vacant lot property of GSIS in Pasig City for
the establishment of the academy.
The agreement stated that the MMDA shall clear the property of all
impounded vehicles and will construct, renovate, and improve the site
for the establishment of the Motorcycle Riding Academy, including the
cost of maintenance and security services, which will generate P1
million worth of savings for the GSIS.
Records showed that motorcycles contributed to the highest number of
road fatalities, at around 38 percent, or 224 fatalities. It also
showed that motorcycle fatalities were still alarming from 2020 to
2022, with 275 fatalities, or an increase of 23 percent from the 2018
data.
