REPRESENTATIVE Elizaldy Co of Ako Bicol has vowed to allocate funds to support the projects of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration aimed at improving the country’s agriculture.
Co commended the President’s vision for Philippine agriculture during his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) which is anticipated to bolster crop production and aid farmers.
Co said Marcos clearly conveyed during his SONA his administration’s comprehensive strategy to enhance local agricultural production through consolidation, modernization, mechanization, and improvement of value chains.
“As the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, I stand resolute in my promise to support and allocate the necessary budget for the administration’s programs and projects geared towards uplifting our hardworking farmers,” said Co, whose party-list Ako Bicol advocacies included agriculture sector empowerment.
The President’s focus on advancing farmers’ knowledge through the use of modern technologies is a laudable step, Co said.
He cited the distribution of more than 28,000 modern agricultural machinery and high-quality seeds as contributing to increased productivity and, ultimately, improved farmer livelihoods.
Co also noted the President’s push for further agricultural infrastructure development and the use of locally-made bio-fertilizers which could boost farmers’ yields while cutting their dependence on expensive imported fertilizers.
“The emphasis on science-based and environmentally responsible methods in agricultural production is commendable. We must strive for sustainability to benefit both the present and future generations,” Co stated.
“Infrastructure development is vital to support our 14 million hectares of farmland. The expansion of farm-to-market roads and irrigation systems will effectively link our agricultural produce to markets and enhance the sector’s potential,” he added.
On aquaculture, Co agreed with the President that advanced facilities should be established to enhance the sector.
“The establishment of fabrication labs, production facilities, and multi-species hatcheries is a testament to our dedication to promoting innovation and sustaining the growth of our aquaculture industry,” he stressed.
Similarly, Co agreed with the President’s plan to strengthen bio-security levels and develop effective medicines and vaccines for livestock to protect agricultural resources from diseases and pests.
“President Marcos Jr.’s comprehensive vision for the agriculture sector will significantly contribute to the growth and prosperity of farmers and rural communities nationwide,” Co stressed.
