International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert Houngbo is set to visit the Philippines next week.
In a statement Friday, the ILO said Houngbo will embark on his first official visit to the Philippines from June 25 to 28.
“ILO Director-General Houngbo will make his first official visit in the country to promote the Global Coalition for Social Justice, which aims to address growing inequalities and persistent poverty, as well as ensure decent work,” the statement said.
“His first official visit coincides with the country’s 75th anniversary of ILO membership,” the ILO added.
The Philippines joined the ILO in 1948.
The ILO official is expected to meet President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma and Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople.
Part of Houngbo’s schedule is the holding of dialogues with representatives of workers’ and employers’ organizations.
Aside from interacting with Filipino key officials, he is set to meet with Asian Development Bank President Masatsugu Asakawa, heads of agencies and members of the United Nations (UN) Country Team, and UN Resident Coordinator Gustavo González.
Houngbo will also deliver the keynote address at the global seafarers’ summit Seafarer 2050, as well as at the National Employers Conference of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines.
He will be visiting the Migrant Worker Resource Center in Quezon City, and engage with overseas Filipino workers and their families regarding rights-based migration, fair recruitment, and decent work.
Houngbo was elected to the ILO post in March 2022.
