‘Voltes V’ stars reflect on series’ learnings and emotional impact

After three years of waiting, Voltes V Legacy is finally hitting national television this May. Yet, before we get to watch the series, its lead stars talk about their journey in portraying their respective characters.

Playing as the five pilots of the Voltes team in the most-awaited live-action adaptation of the ‘70s Japanese anime series, Miguel Tanfelix, Ysabel Ortega, Radson Flores, Matt Lozano, and Raphael Landicho went back to the things they had learned from their roles.

Miguel, the ‘leader’ of the Voltes V team as Steve Armstrong, shared that his character taught him the importance of becoming ready in times of trouble.

“Sa buhay natin, darating ‘yung time na bibigyan ka ng malaking challenge, bibigyan ka ng malaking responsibility on your shoulders, so you have to be ready all the time. Kailangan mo lang ng lakas ng loob,” stated Miguel.

Ysabel, on the other hand, described her character Jamie Robinson as a strong person and an independent woman who has the drive to prove herself, which she could relate to. Yet, one thing that she had learned from Jamie is to follow your heart.

“No matter what, as long as you listen to it, [what] your heart and mind say, talagang may patutunguhan ‘yung ipinaglalaban mo,” said Ysabel.

“And si Jaimie dito, ang dami niyang ipinaglalaban. Ipinaglalaban niya ‘yung pamilya niya. Ipinaglalaban niya ‘yung buong mundo and at the same time, ipinaglalaban rin niya ‘yung puso niya,” she continued.

Radson, who played the distant and aloof Mark Gordon realized the significance of the people that surround you.

“Magtiwala po kayo and maniwala kayo na kahit anong mangyari, may mga taong nagmamahal sa’yo and hindi ka pababayaan. Trust the people around you na nagpapakita ng motive na meron talaga silang mabuting gagawin for you,” granted Radson.

Just like his co-stars, Matt also emphasized the importance of having the presence of their parents while growing up.

“Dapat i-cherish mo ‘yung every moment with your parents kasi you’ll never know kung hanggang saan mapupunta ‘yung hangganan ng relationship mo with your parent. Kasi sa Voltes V, longing si Big Bert sa magulang and natutunan kong mahalin pa ‘yung parents ko dahil do’n,” Matt shared.

Being the youngest cast of the show, Raphael thought ahead of his age as he expressed his learnings from his character.

“Natutunan ko po as Little John is wala pong edad-edad, kahit bata ka pa po basta meron ka pong mituulong, ipaglaban mo po dapat,” Raphael stated.

Personally, as a kid who grew up watching this anime, Voltes V indeed has a lot of teachings—from loving your family and your friends to teach us how we can save the world in our own little ways.

I got the chills and goosebumps watching teasers and trailers, and now that we are finally getting the live-action series after almost three years, I really can’t wait to see how GMA will retell the story of my five childhood heroes.

Voltes V Legacy will soon air on GMA Telebabad in May yet fans will get to have a sneak peek of how the journey of five friends begins as they become this generation’s heroes with Voltes V: The Cinematic Experience on April 19 in selected SM Cinemas.
