DOST Region 10 supports smart and sustainable cities

Cagayan de Oro City—Among the highlights of the recently concluded National Science and Technology Week sa Amihanang Mindanao is the sealing of the DOST’s partnership with five mayors who expressed interest in building smart and sustainable cities and communities in the region on Oct. 25 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding will pave the way for a vibrant partnership between DOST-10 and the LGUs and other stakeholders in outlining projects to address the challenges of the urban and regional life of communities by harnessing science, technology and innovation.

The partner LGUs, in partnership with their provincial S&T offices, were given the opportunity to conceptualize and propose their own projects under the program, based on the need, opportunities and visions of their communities.

With the implementation of the DOST Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities Framework in Northern Mindanao, the vision to transform communities into smart and sustainable is now commencing.

The goal of smart and sustainable cities and communities is for a high quality of life, a competitive economy and sustainability. Ushering smart, resilient and sustainable communities is among the strategies articulated by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum.

A smart city project has been successfully implemented in Cauayan City in Isabela under the leadership of Sancho Mabborang, the DOST undersecretary for regional operations.

Mabborang signed the MOU with Mayor Lemuel Meyrick Acosta of Oroquieta City, Mayor Frederick Siao of Iligan City, Mayor Charlie Buhisan of Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental, Romeo Laciperos Jr. representing Mayor Warren Jay Pabillaran of Malaybalay City and Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya representing Mayor Rolando Uy of Cagayan de Oro City.
