A once ugly and disfigured stray dog, known as the ‘Zombie Dog,’ won Binibining Aspin 2022 during the Ginoo and Binibining Aspin 2022 pageant held at Ayala Malls Manila Bay on Sunday. The fur-pageant, presented by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in celebration of National Aspin Day, aimed to take pride and showcase to the world the beauty of native dogs or Aspins (Asong Pinoy).
Brownie, owned by Janelle Manalang, was named Ginoong Aspin 2022. Kelly earned the judges’ nod with her dazzling Banaue Rice Terraces-Igorot maiden costume, and also won the Dusit Thani Manila Most Adorable Choice award. Kelly, an Aspin rescue and adopted during the surge of the pandemic, was featured in a GMA-7’s 24 Oras TV segment entitled “Zombie Dog noon, Fashionista na ngayon,” which tells about her inspiring story of survival as a street dog and remarkable transformation as a rescue dog.
Oreo, owned by Rona Tagadang, and Megan, owned by Abby del Monte, were named Binibining Aspin 1st and 2nd runners-up, respectively. Rocky, a DWD (dog with disability), owned by Chaby Binco and Lucky, owned by Sarah Geronimo, were named Ginoong Aspin 1st and 2nd runners-up, respectively.
In 2021, PAWS declared August 18 as annual National Aspin Day to bring attention to the true worth and beauty of Aspins and to stop discrimination against them. The fur-pageant launched the “I LOVE MY ASPIN” campaign featuring PAWS’ newest spokesperson Alden Richards and his aspin Chichi, a rejoinder to Heart Evangelista’s ‘Have a Heart for Aspins.’
Hosted by Gelli Victor with guest performance by Barbie Almalbis who rendered her “An Aspin’s Song” she composed for her late aunt, Tata Hontiveros-Lichauco, president of PAWS, who lived her life for the love and cause of Aspins and Puspins.
Celebrity judges were Janella Salvador, newest Valentina of TV series Darna, and Zahra Saldua, Miss Earth Philippines Air 2018, together with Stephanie Estaño, Ayala Malls Manila Bay marketing associate, and Anna Cabrera, PAWS executive director.
