PH lifters add 6 more golds to Asian haul

There is no letting up for Team Philippines as two more Filipina bets dished out dominant performances late Tuesday night (PH time) in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Zamboanga pride Rosegie Ramos, 18, and 15-year-old Rosalinda Faustino bagged three gold medals each in their respective divisions to improve the country’s total golden haul to 12 in the ongoing tournament that gathered the best young weightlifters in the region.

Following the path of her younger sister Rose Jean, who a day earlier captured four gold medals, Ramos dominated the junior women’s 49kgs, hoisting 80 kgs in the snatch for 96 in the clean and jerk for a superior total of 176 kgs.

Same with Ramos, Faustino made three trips to the podium after topping the snatch (71kgs) and the clean and jerk (90 kgs) to come up with a total of 161 kgs, which proved to be the best in the women’s youth 49kg division.

The Philippines has so far garnered 12 golds, two silvers and three bronze medals going into the last day of the tournament today (Thursday), with Vanessa Sarno also looking to sweep the golds in the women’s junior -71kg where she’s the reigning Asian seniors’ champion.

Angeline Colonia, a 15-year-old Zamboangena with an Olympian pedigree, kicked off the country’s campaign on a high note after striking two gold medals in record-breaking fashion in the youth women’s 40kg category on opening day.

The nephew of Rio Olympian Nestor Colonia bagged the gold in the snatch with a lift of 62 kgs, breaking the old Asian and World record of 61 kgs set in November 2018. Colonia also took the silver in the clean and jerk with a 72-kg performance for a total of 134 kilograms which gave her the second gold medal.
