The greatness of Nora Aunor as an actor is finally elevated into the pantheon of Filipino national artists, an honor that’s been a long time coming.
Conferred by Malacañang National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Aunor was overjoyed with emotions and expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone, including President Rodrigo Duterte, who relented and signed her conferment, along with seven other new National Artists, after rejecting her in 2018.
Of the hundreds of highly-acclaimed films that the 69-year-old Aunor made, one particular gem of a scene would remain as my favorite, the iconic “My brother is not a pig” scene in the 1976 Lupita Kashiwahara’s Minsan Isang Gamu-Gamu, which also won Famas best picture. It’s probably the most powerful and electrifying acting scene ever recorded in Philippine cinema.
The only movie in which Aunor played a pageant winner is in 1982’s Armando Reyes/Freddie Sarrol comedy Palengke Queen. Testament to Aunor’s stature and caliber as an artist is her singular honor of being helmed by the country’s national artists-film directors Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, Ysmael Bernal, and Lino Brocka.
