Tuao, Cagayan—A P31-million regional evacuation complex was completed and is now ready to serve communities affected during calamities that hit Region 2 or the Cagayan Valley region.
According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, the complex is located in Barangay Lallayug-Abut in this municipality, and was recently inaugurated.
Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said the evacuation complex consists of eight buildings which will provide immediate public assistance during disasters, particularly during typhoons, floodings and landslides.
Citing a report from Loreta Malaluan, DPWH Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) officer in charge, Villar said that among the buildings constructed were a two-story main building, two-story operations office, infirmary building and a garbage disposal building.
In addition to a prayer room, Malalluan said that the main building has a multiple bed capacity, dining area, food preparation area, dishwashing area, communication room and storage room.
“With this new evacuation complex in Cagayan province, we are hoping that casualties during calamities will be reduced and that the delivery of basic needs of residents that will be affected by disasters in the area will be much easier,” Villar said.
He also assured that the DPWH will continue to exert their ultimate efforts to design and build resilient evacuation facilities all over the country to aid fellow government agencies in response and relief operations.
Funded under the 2017 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program (DPWH-RIP), the project is one of the seven regional evacuation complexes that are being built in the Cagayan Valley region, he added.
Villar said the DPWH is one of the government agencies that are also at the forefront of disaster risk preparedness and management.
