CJ Perez scored 10 points for the Philippine men’s basketball team as they repulsed Indonesia, 21-9, to complete a two-gold sweep of the 30th Southeast Asian Games 3×3 basketball tournament yesterday at the FilOil-Flying Sports Center in San Juan.
Afril Bernardino also unloaded 10 points in the Philippine women’s squads’ 17-13 beating of Thailand for the women’s division gold earlier.
Team Pilipinas, getting instructions from coach Ronnie Magsanoc, finished with an eight-zero winning run in stopping the Indonesian’s outside shooting.
“Indonesia had a lot of sharpshooters. We just wanted to protect the two-point line and make them earn their points,” said team skipper Chris Newsome.
Newsome’s crew reached the finals following a six-game sweep of the elimination round and after crushing Cambodia, 21-6.
They advanced to the finals following a 21-9 triumph over Thailand.
They were slightly ahead, 4-3, when Newsome initiated a 6-0 run with his drive past Itun Surliyadin.
And they went on to protect a 9-4 spread with 7:27 left.
The Filipinas bounced back from a 20-22 loss to the Thais in the women’s elims, and as they ended the group stage with a 4-1 slate.
They went on topple Vietnam, 21-12, in the semis and arrange a finals clash with the Thais.
Two two-pointers from Jack Danielle Animam with 7:15 to go shattered a 4-all deadlock, and the Filipinas went on to establish an 11-5 spread.
“Malaking advantage nung naka-score kami ng mga two points at nakawala kami,” said team skipper Janine Pontejos.
The Thais made it to the finals after they waylaid Malaysia, 16-14.
