PCUP holds job fair for poor

Saying that the poor need more jobs and livelihood opportunities, the Presidential Commission on Urban Poor on Wednesday vowed to stay away from a grand celebration of its annual Urban Poor Solidarity Week in December.

Alvin Feliciano, PCUP chairman and chief executive officer, assured the public that instead of spending too much money for a “luxurious” celebration of the yearly activity, the agency would focus more on providing employment and livelihood program to the needy and jobless.

To celebrate the agency’s significant contribution on poverty reduction, the PCUP is set to hold a mega job fair in Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao next month, he said.

The late President Corazon Aquino issued Proclamation No. 367, declaring Dec. 2 to Dec. 8 every year the urban poor solidarity week.

According to Feliciano, the extensive job fair is well-planned in a bid to open various job and livelihood opportunities not just from government agencies but also from private sector.
