Philippine coins and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ coin education campaign both gained international recognition in an award ceremony in Italy last month.
The International Association of Currency Affairs recognized the BSP in the Excellence in Currency 2019 Coin Awards at the biennial Coin Conference in Rome on Oct. 15, 2019.
Established in 2007, IACA’s Excellence in Currency Awards Program promotes and recognizes excellence in currency production, processing, management and distribution.
The BSP’s New Generation Currency coin series and the Coin-Ed Campaign were among the top three finalists awarded in the Best New Circulating Coins and Best Public Education Program categories, respectively.
The NGC Coin Series which includes the 10-Piso, 5-Piso, 1-Piso, 25-Sentimo, 5-Sentimo and 1-Sentimo, was released in circulation in March 2018.
IACA cited the enhanced aesthetic of the NGC coins, cutting-edge security features and improved wear and corrosion resistance capabilities. The NGC coins feature native flora, heroes and stylized Philippine flag.
