Citi launches wellness-focused credit card

More people are making their health a priority, according to several records and reports. The wellness market, which includes gyms and spas, is now valued at $4.2 trillion, the Global Wellness Institute said.

Citi launches wellness-focused credit card
Citi Philippines chief executive officer Aftab Ahmed, Mercury Drug assistant to the president Steven Azcona, Visa country manager Dan Wolbert, and Citi Philippines consumer business head Manoj Varma unveil the new Mercury Drug Citi card.

The increasing popularity of health and wellness lifestyle has, in turn, resulted in the growth in spending on fitness classes, race events, healthy meal plan delivery, yoga and meditation, and health supplements, among others.

“Aside from it has become more fashionable to have better-looking physique, I think there is a growing recognition as well that you need to take care of your health and your body,” Citi Philippines consumer business manager Manoj Varma told Manila Standard.

Varma said the health and wellness is currently the “fastest growing category within credit card.” And here in the Philippines, the official said, one of their top 5 merchants in credit card is Mercury Drug, the country’s leading drugstore.

“Average spending per transaction basis is also increasing, higher than the average in the marketplace. It’s a sign that customers are thinking and acting more in terms of wellness, and looking to spend more time and resources in that category,” he shared.

To cater to this growing trend, Citi teams up with Mercury Drug to launch the new Mercury Drug Citi card that provides cardholders with the best health, beauty, and wellness benefits.

“Citi wants to equip customers with the tools that will allow them to be the best versions of themselves with the new Mercury Drug Citi card,” said Varma.

The new card allows cardholders to earn more points through their Mercury Drug purchases as well as when they invest in their wellbeing, through gym memberships, salon visits, spa treatments, and clinic check-ups.

Customers earn one point for every P200 spend anywhere (except drugstores other than Mercury Drug): get 5x points on Mercury Drug purchases (on up to P320,000 spend on Mercury Drug every month): get 3x points on health, beauty, wellness spend; get 18 percent off the annual membership fee at Kerry Sports Manila until Dec. 31; access free Emergency Ambulance Service with Lifeline once a year within Metro Manila; and avail of a free Annual Physical Exam with Healthcube until Dec. 31.

Cardholders also earn points with no expiration and get preferred access to health and wellness events.

Mercury Drug Citi cardholders can also redeem their points against their billing statement at 1 point = 1 peso conversion.
