The NPC said the complainants found out that the lenders gained access and used their contacts in their lists as third parties and possible candidates for loans without their consent.
Personal information of the data subjects were leaked to third parties- illegally collected from the contact lists of their phones-which were mostly untrue. Some were even asked to settle the loans in behalf of the borrowers, since they were declared as co-borrowers or guarantors.
The same information were also used to harass the borrowers to compel them to settle their debts.
Borrowers also complained the lenders used social media as a way to publicly shame as well as threaten and harass them.
Earlier, the NPC filed cases against three major online lending companies found guilty of alleged public shaming of borrowers.
