A 12-member Philippine Volcanoes' team is set to see action in the first of three legs of the 2019 Asia Rugby Men’s Sevens Series this weekend in Incheon, Korea.
Two newcomers are joining the Volcanoes, seen as a sign of depth for the team, which will have a busy international calendar in the last quarter of 2019.
The Philippines will be competing in a total of five international events over the next four months, providing them opportunities for new talent to shine, according Philippine Rugby Football Union General Manager Jake Letts.
Coach David Johnston selected two new debutantes for the opening leg,Luc Villalba Smith and Nick Gaffud Robertson.
Both players have been selected after performing strongly at their training camp and playing a high level of rugby in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
The team will be captained by Robert Luceno Fogerty, with the newbies playing alongside key players Tommy Kalaw Gilbert, Timothy Bweheni, and Tim Alonso Berry.
Team Philippines has been seeded in a strong pool alongside host nation South Korea, rugby powerhouse Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei.
