The Asian Institute of Management’s first research and development facility, optimized for artificial intelligence technology and powered by Acer’s supercomputer, has won the Technological Innovation of the Year during the first Asia Awards organized by London-based Times Higher Education.
AIM bested leading universities in Asia in the technological innovation category for its corporate laboratory called Analytics, Computing and Complex Systems Laboratory or ACCeSs@AIM.
The laboratory was established to complement existing academic programs and bridge the gap between theory and practice for research-led teaching in higher education.
ACCeSs@AIM boasts of the Acer supercomputer, which is a first of its kind in the country and one of the fastest supercomputing devices in the ASEAN region. It has an expansive storage capacity of 500 terabytes and A computing speed of up to 500 teraflops.
The supercomputer was donated through StanShih Foundation led by Acer co-Founder and Honorary Chairman, Stan Shih, as head start to AIM’s new laboratory.
The Asia Awards judges cited ACCeSs@AIM as an innovative facility that “has given students a vital ability to learn with leading-edge technology that they can take into their future employment.”
The judges said the facility was an exemplary initiative that perfectly illustrates strategic vision and technical innovation, creating positive opportunities for advancement.
New York University dean for science and Filipino-American biologist Michael Purugganan said that the R&D facility is a testament that the Philippines is not lagging in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
“It shows what dedicated and brilliant faculty, resources and vision can do to propel us forward,” Purugganan said during the awarding ceremony.
