GMA dramas continue to gain popularity in Myanmar through successful partnerships between GMA Worldwide, Inc., (GWI) the network’s content distribution subsidiary, and prominent broadcasters and content aggregators in the country.
GMA’s hit primetime series Heart and Soul (Kambal Karibal) is currently being shown on Channel 7, the second free-to-air channel of Myanmar’s Forever Group Co., Ltd. It is a fantasy drama about two sisters whose bond is tested even in the afterlife. It features the tandem of Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix who were also paired in primetime dramas Once Upon A Kiss and Sahaya. The series also launched actress Kyline Alcantara who later on headlined Written in the Stars.
Meanwhile, Happy Together (Inday Will Always Love You), GMA’s top-rating romantic comedy series is airing on Myanmar National TV Channel (MNTV), a free-to-air TV channel seen in most major cities in the country by an estimate of 25.3 million viewers. It stars Barbie Forteza (Meant To Be, Kara Mia) as a simple girl whose life becomes complicated when she becomes an instant millionaire.
Lastly, Angela (Haplos), one of the network’s most successful 2018 daytime dramas, is currently shown on MRTV Entertainment ME Channel, a free-to-air channel owned by state-run Myanmar Radio Television (MRTV). It stars Sanya Lopez (For Love or Money) and Thea Tolentino (The Half Sisters) as half-sisters who both possess superpowers: one can heal with her touch while the other causes pain.
Other GMA dramas that recently aired in Myanmar include the epic fantasy series Encantadia, romantic comedy My Sweet Heart, and revenge dramas The Stepdaughters and Contessa. The dramas are aired in the original Filipino language and subtitled in Burmese.
The continuous demand for GMA’s top-rating content is one of the many things that strengthen the economic and cultural ties between Myanmar and the Philippines. GWI looks forward to continuing its presence in the country by providing quality Filipino dramas sure to captivate Burmese viewers.
