Torres sets sights on future after another heartbreak

Despite another disappointing outing on the ONE Championship stage, Filipina standout Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres is far from losing hope.

The Zamboanga del Norte native lost to Malaysian star Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan via triangle choke in the first round at ONE: MASTERS OF DESTINY at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday, 12 July.

This was Torres' fourth straight loss in a span of 10 months, a disappointing turn since she started her career in The Home of Martial Arts with three straight wins.

But Torres remains unfazed.

“The loss obviously hurts,” Torres said. “Especially since it’s by triangle choke again. I admit I drifted away from the game plan and I wasn’t able to execute the things that we worked on in the gym – especially after my loss in Yangon.”

“Like in my other bouts, there are a lot of things that I learned. I felt like I started well against Jihin but I failed to maximize on it, and it was the same old trap on the ground which got me,” Torres added. “But for sure, this will only make me better in the future.”

The match against “Shadow Cat” looked promising on the onset for Torres as she connected with a couple of solid punches in the early striking battle.

But things took a turn for the worse for the Filipina the moment the match hit the ground.

Not even a string of power slams from the top position gave Torres the edge she needed as Jihin secured the Filipina's neck and set up a triangle choke, resulting in a submission at the 1:53 mark of the first round.

“I had a great game plan against her,” the Catalan Fighting System standout said. “The chances were there but I failed to capitalize. I know I had a lot of shortcomings in that match, and I plan on identifying and working on them.”

“Like what coach Rene said: No vacations. We’re back to training when we get back to Manila.”

Regardless of the situation, Torres remains upbeat after the match and she’s already on the lookout for her next outing.

The 23-year old said that she’s ready to go anytime – even saying that she’ll come prepared if a slot opens up for the upcoming  ONE: DAWN OF HEROES card in Manila, Philippines, which is three weeks away from now.
