The Commission on Elections on Wednesday said it has received 36 electoral protest cases, more than two weeks after the conduct of the May 13 midterm elections.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said that protest cases involving national, city and provincial elective positions are under the jurisdiction of Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila.
Under existing rules, Comelec, through one of its two divisions, shall handle all election protests involving regional, provincial and city officials.
Jimenez, meanwhile, said protest cases involving senators are presented before the Senate Electoral Tribunal while the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal handles cases involving congressmen.
As for poll protests of municipal elective positions, he said these should be filed before the Regional Trial Courts.
In a statement, the Electoral Contests Adjudication Department said it has so far received a total of 36 cases, 16 days after the midterm polls.
However, Jimenez did not identify any prominent personalities involved in the election protests but said that the cases submitted to the Comelec were from the cities of Taguig and San Juan; and provinces of Leyte, Kalinga and Negros.
“We invite anyone with complaints to approach us in official channels so we could act on your complaints at soonest,” Jimenez said.
