Makati to enforce road closure, rerouting plan

The Makati City government will enforce road closure and rerouting scheme in connection with the annual Flores de Mayo from 1p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday.

City chief information officer Romulo Salgado Jr. said the program would start from the Makati City Hall Quadrangle to the Globe Circuit Event Grounds via Hormiga Street, Trabajo Street, Hippodromo Street, and A.P. Reyes Street.

The following route will be imposed:

For private and public utility vehicles along Garcia Street coming from Kalayaan Avenue (Eastbound heading to Rockwell Area and Guadalupe): 

• Take J.P. Rizal Avenue towards Antipolo Street, right turn to S. Osmena Street, left turn to either E. Zobel Street or P. Burgos Street Extension (Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge Service Road), right turn to A. Mabini Street, left turn to J. P. Rizal Avenue to normal route destination, or

• Take J.P. Rizal Avenue towards Antipolo Street, right turn to S. Osmena Street, right turn to P. Burgos Street Extension (Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge Service Road), left turn to J. P. Rizal Avenue to normal route destination towards Guadalupe/EDSA.

For private and public utility vehicles along J.P. Rizal Avenue coming from Rockwell and Edsa Westbound heading to Makati City Hall and Delpan Street:

• A “stop and go” scheme will be implemented along A.P. Reyes Street to give way to the procession. Traffic cones will be installed by Public Safety Department personnel to manage traffic in the area.

The Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) Festival or Santacruzan is one of the most celebrated events in May in Makati and throughout the country. The procession of sagalas and their  escorts depicts the search of St. Helena for the cross of Jesus Christ and gives honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 

According to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), it was first introduced to the Filipinos by Spanish friars in 1854.
