Coming off a tough loss last January, former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio could not have started his quest for redemption any better.
Eustaquio looked crisp as he scored a convincing unanimous decision victory over Kim Kyu Sung at ONE: ENTER THE DRAGON at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last Friday, 17 May.
Despite the massive height and reach disadvantage against the six-foot Sung, Eustaquio’s superior striking was simply too much for the South Korean giant.
The victory brought Eustaquio back to the winner’s circle. But more importantly, it gave back the momentum which he lost after a narrow decision defeat to Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes at ONE: HERO’S ASCENT last January.
“I’m very happy with my victory. I believe and trust the process, hoping for more wins to come,” Eustaquio said, though he admitted to not being satisfied with the win.
“To be honest, I’m not a hundred percent satisfied with my performance. I’m looking forward to get better and I’m willing to go back to the drawing board and be a better athlete.”
Facing the taller Sung, Eustaquio worked tirelessly to cut the distance, mixing his point of attacks with spinning elbows, backfists and kicks – catching the South Korean off guard.
The 30-year-old Baguio City native was quick to credit his team, as they played a major role in the development of his game plan last Friday.
“In Baguio, in the mountains, there are only a few six footers. It’s a good thing that I have Jeremy Pacatiw, Jerry Olsim, Carlo Alvarez, we brought what we call the towers just so I have training partners,” Eustaquio shared.
“It’s really difficult taking on tall athletes but these guys prepared me well.”
After securing his first win this year, Eustaquio has no plans of stopping here. The goal does not end on winning World Titles or bringing home accolades – it’s all about being a better athlete.
"I would like to get back to the drawing board, be a better athlete. It’s my ultimate goal right now,: shared Eustaquio.
“I’m not looking forward to a title or a championship, it’s all about making myself a better athlete and soon everything will follow.”
