The Department of Trade and Industry is set to reinstate the mandatory standards on the roofing material and plywood due to the growing concern among consumers about the safety of these products, especially the imported ones.
Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said the products were in the list of priority products that should undergo mandatory testing amid the construction boom.
“Lately, there has been a spate of complaints about the quality of these products. I can’t say if the market is indeed flooded with substandard products but as far as our monitoring went, there abound numerous products that are not of mandatory standards,” he said.
The department noted that some steel roofing products were not following the required Philippine Standard for tensile and strength of proper roofing material.
Most plywood materials, meanwhile, do not possess the necessary thickness and length. Plywood supply, especially in the provinces, were usually short of the mandatory thickness required by the Bureau of Product Standards.
