Sara says Facebook account purged; FB says for security

San Francisco, Agusan del Sur—Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s Facebook account has been purged for good, a claim denied by the social networking site.

Sara, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, disclosed this one week after she said she had been temporarily locked out of her Facebook account.

“Yes, I no longer have access to my Facebook account. My friends also tell me they cannot access me on my account,” Carpio said.

But she said she would not appeal to Facebook, adding Facebook was not a public property and therefore the site could do anything in connection with their business.

Carpio, who uses photo-sharing app Instagram regulary, said she was not splitting hairs over the issue since creating a new account is always an option.

Facebook, in a statement on Wednesday, said Carpio’s account was placed under security checkpoint due to possible hacking.

“The account was placed on a security checkpoint after our systems detected suspicious attempts to gain access to her account. We are helping Mayor Sara Duterte regain access to her account on Facebook,” Facebook said in a statement.

In a separate Facebook post, Jefry Tupas who serves as Davao City Information Officer, confirmed Facebook’s denial it purged Sara’s account and said that their camp was assured by Facebook that steps taken on Sara’s account “has nothing to do with the takedowns we conducted last week.”

Tupas was referring to the incident last March where at least 200 accounts associated with Nic Gabunada were taken down by Facebook due to their “use of network of fake accounts to mislead people.”
