DICT seeks accord for telecom towers

The Department of Information and Communications Technology wants an agreement with telecommunication companies to speed up the rollout of the government’s common tower initiative.

The agency has proposed the signing of an agreement to build 50,000 common towers in seven years between the National Telecommunications Commission and the telecom companies.

The DICT and NTC under the agreement will identify sites where common towers are recommended to be built, with a target of 3,000 sites on the first year and gradually increasing them to 10,000 from the fifth to the seventh year.

The telecom companies should also coordinate with the two parties in identifiying  priority sites.

The DICT plans to finalize the common tower policy within a month after the telecom firms release the list of sites identified for the tower roll-out.

“Telcos will be the end-user of these common towers so we fully need their cooperation to improve our overall telecommunication landscape,” said Acting DICT Secretary Eliseo Rio Jr.
