Aquino heads BES Patrol Move team

United States Chess Federation (USCF) master Jose “Jojo” Aquino Jr. will spearhead a strong cast clashing in the Hon. Alfredo “Fred” De Veyra III Cup Open Chess Team Tournament on Sunday, January 20 at the third floor of Alphaland Southgate Mall, Edsa Magallanes in Makati City.

Aquino, head coach of the multi-tilted National University chess team under the watchful eye of team manager Samson Go, will led the BES Patrol move chess team backed up by Engineer/National Master Robert Arellano and Rolly Yongco. Apart from Aquino, the team is made up of National Master and United States Chess Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Joshua Michael Yongco.

Also competing are 3 pawns Attack Chess Team of Fide Master David Elorta, Christopher Megino and Genghis Katipunan Imperial as well the Team Cavite Chess Expert League of Laurence Wilfred “Larry” Dumadag, Sherwin Tiu and Jaymarc Gutierrez.

“Each team composed of three players must only have an average rating of 2100.” said Davao del Norte district 1 board member Hon. Alfredo “Fred” De Veyra III who teaming up with International Master Oliver Dimakiling and Jason Rojo.

They will be playing a seven-round Swiss system format according to tournament director Fide Master Nelson “Elo” Mariano III, younger brother of Grandmaster Nelson Mariano II and Woman International Master Cristine Rose Mariano-Wågman.

The team champion will earn P50,000. The second placer will get P40,000, third P30,000, fourth P20,000, fifth P10,000 and sixth P7,000. Seventh to Tenth placers will get P4,000 each.

The one-day event is supported by Davao del Norte district 1 board member Hon. Alfredo “Fred” De Veyra III in coordination with the En Passant Chess Association, Alphaland Southgate and officiated by the Chess Arbiter Union of the Philippines led by chief arbiter FNA Alexander “Alex” Dinoy and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
