Life term on 4 Sino drug convicts

There will be no special treatment for the four Chinese citizens who were sentenced to life in jail for their involvement in the operation of a floating shabu laboratory in Subic, Malacañang said Thursday.

“We assure the public that no special treatment will be accorded to the four Chinese drug convicts,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

An Olongapo court last week handed down the sentences to Win Fai Lo, Shu Fook Leung, Kam Wah Kwok and Kwok Tung Chan. They were sentenced for transporting illegal drugs into the country and operating a floating shabu laboratory in Zambales.

Panelo promised the families of the Chinese nationals that the four “will be given proper treatment in prison.”

“They will be humanely treated in accordance with the Bill of Rights under our Constitution, as well as with appropriate Philippine laws and rules,” he said.

Panelo also said they would coordinate with the Justice department for the possible deportation of the four.

He said the indictment of the four was “clear proof” of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.

The four Chinese nationals from Hong Kong are the first foreigners to be convicted of a drug-related offense under the Duterte administration’s crackdown on drugs.

They were arrested on July 11, 2016 after a government raiding team found them aboard a 50-meter fishing vessel serving as their “floating shabu laboratory” off the waters of Subic in Zambales.
