The country’s leading amateurs and rising stars set out for another fierce battle for golf supremacy as they slug it out in the Riviera MVPSF Amateur Championship which gets going Friday, Nov. 9 at Riviera’s Langer course in Silang, Cavite.
Aidric Chan and Sean Ramos banner the men’s Championship division that also features the likes of Leandro Bagtas, Aldo Barro, Paolo Barro, Carl Corpus, Dan Cruz, Josh Jorge, Miguel Olivarez-Ilas, Rald Sarmiento, Paolo Uy and Paolo Wong.
Sofia Legaspi, meanwhile, gears up for a repeat of her title feat last year but expects a tough outing against last year’s runner-up Kayla Nocum and a slew of talented players out to stamp their mark in the 54-hole tournament presented by the MVP Sports Foundation and held as part of PLDT Group National Amateur Tour.
Also tipped to contend for the women’s crown are Sofia Chabon, Sunshine Baraquiel, Nicole Abelar, Laia Barro, Sam Dizon, Laurea Duque, Kristine Fleetwood, Bernice Olivarez-Ilas, Rafaela Singson, Kristine Torralba and young Eagle Ace Superal in one of the strongest casts in a local amateur championship.
Koreans Lee Sang Min (men’s), and Gi Soon Choi and Kang Da Yun (women’s) also go all out to spoil the locals’ title drive in the event conducted and organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Other titles to be disputed are the Mid-Amateur and Seniors to be disputed over 36 holes. Also on tap is the Special Division for boys’ and girls’ 12 years old and below as part of NGAP’s grassroots program, also to be played over 36 holes.
Fees are pegged at P2,500 (local) and P3,500 (foreign) for elite amateur division, P2,000 (local) and P3,000 (foreign) for mid-am and seniors divisions and P1,000 for Riviera members.
Leading the Mid-Am cast are Erik Escalona, Jeff Razon, Don Padilla, Raymond Co and Eric Gozo while Butch Bakunawa and Mike Besa head the Seniors division field that includes Alex Escalona, Bobby Iñigo and Jose Alvarez Jr.
