The Philippine Lady Volcanoes national women’s rugby team came home with silver medal recently in the 2018 Asia Trophy Series in Brunei.
The Filipinas took home the silver medal after winning five straight games, before bowing to Malaysia, 7-10, in the Gold Medal match.
The Gold Medal match was tight, with the Malaysians scoring first and taking a 5-0 lead.
The Volcanoes returned with a converted try to regain the upper hand, 7-5.
But, the Malaysians grabbed back the lead as they posted a 10-7 edge late in the second half.
The Philippines then ran out of time in their efforts to score and ended with the silver medal.
“It was great to see the team perform. Aiumi Ono was outstanding. Rassiel Sales showed pure speed. Sylvia Tudoc had fantastic Rugby awareness and Nicole Kovanen had brute strength (which allowed her to) go forward. The whole team as a group played attacking Rugby. It was great to watch,” said General Manager Jake Letts.
The 2018 Asia Trophy Series was contested over two days, with 10 teams competing. The Philippines drew Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal in Pool B. Indonesia, Malaysia, Guam, Brunei and Laos were in Pool A.
The Lady Volcanoes were sponsored by First Pacific and MVP Sports Foundation, and they started their first game with a strong performance defeating Uzbekistan 12-10.
They then defeated Pakistan 38-0 in their second match, before holding their ground for a 17-10 victory over India.
The Philippines then handed Nepal a 43-0 rout to secure their position on the top of Pool B with four wins in four matches.
The Volcanoes then toppled Guam, 10-7, to book their place in the Gold Medal match against Malaysia.
