Group of contractors bucks cement tariffs

A group has strongly opposed the imposition of safeguard measures on imported cement, saying it will hurt consumers and alcontractors.

Philippine Contractors Association Inc. said in a position paper that while the safeguard measure favored local cement makers, the local construction industry would bear the brunt of higher prices once safeguard measures were slapped on imports.

“In these times of increased activities in the construction of residential houses, residential and commercial condominiums, office buildings, industrial plants, roads, and bridges and other structures where cement is a major component, the imposition of safeguard measures will surely tilt the balance and adversely affect the buying public,” the group said in the paper.

The Tariff Commission earlier reversed earlier safeguard measures recommended by the Department of Trade and Industry on cement after the appellate court ruled against them.
