100 workers get cash aid from DFA

CLARK Freeport—An estimated 100 overseas Filipino Workers whose flights were canceled by typhoon Ompong here were given P5,000 each by the government Saturday.

The government’s financial assistance will cover their meals, accommodation and other expenses while awaiting the resumption of flights at Clark International Airport.

The  cash assistance is being processed by the  consular offices in the cities of Angeles and San Fernando upon the instruction of Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, DFA assistant secretary Elmer Cato said.

Cato and personnel of the Clark International Airport Corp. are now assisting since Saturday morning the processing of the financial assistance to the workers.

Glicelito Nelmida, an OFW from La Union, thanked the government for the assistance.

The assistance reached P500,000 based on the daily 100 OFWs using CRK as their gateway for their destinations.

Aside from Business Process Outsourcing, the OFWs working abroad are also major contributors to economy with annual remittance of estimated $25 billion, according to officials.
