One of the entries to the upcoming To Farm Film Festival on Sept. 12 to 18, get’s the much needed boost from The Japan Foundation Manila that pledges its support for Tanabata’s Wife.
It is one of the six finalists in this year’s ToFarm Film Festival, an annual farming advocacy project of Dr. Milagros How, MD, president of the ToFarm Film Festival Foundation.
Now on its third year, the film festival will be in major cinemas nationwide.
Inspired by Sinai Hamada’s short story of the same title, Charlson Ong’s Tanabata’s Wife tells the story of Tanabata, a Japanese immigrant farmer in the 1920s Trinidad Valley in the Mountain Province. He meets and falls in love with Fasang, maiden farmhand in Bontok. He marries her and soon bears a son.
But all is not too well between the two as personal, cultural and language differences get in the way of their relationship.
Will love eventually prevail against all odds?
The film features renowned international Japanese actor Miyuki Kamimura as Tanabata and introducing Mai Fanglayanas Fasang, Tanabata’s alluring wife.
Directed by Charlson Ong and my friend Lito Casaje, with cinematography by Nap Jamir, editing by Mayi Padilla, production design by Martin Masadao, and line produced by Choy Pangilinan, the resonance of this poignant and lyrical film still rings true today as Japanese farmers in Baguio would entice this time Filipino farmers to tend their farms in Japan.
Ably supported as well by the University of the Philippines Film Institute, Tanabata’s’ Wife premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at the Trinoma Cinema.
Tickets are available at the cinema ticketing office.

This is a licensed format from international production and distribution house, Endemol Shine Group and is a compelling storyline, which lends itself to great localization.
