Lady Red Spikers rip Altas to stay alive

San Beda recovered from a third set collapse to Perpetual Help, 25-19, 25-15, 9-25, 25-21, and keep its slim hopes for a semis playoff in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan Wednesday.

After dominating the Lady Altas in the first two frames, the Lady Red Spikers stumbled on errors in the next then blew a 16-11 lead in the fourth before Satrriani Espiritu, Nieza Viray and Cesca Racraquin took charge in the stretch to power the team to victory.

It was only San Beda’s second win against four defeats as it joined St. Benilde at fifth, just behind the fourth running University of the Philippines (3-3) heading to the last two playdates of the single round elims of the mid-season conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.

“This victory is huge for us,” said San Beda U coach Nemesio Gavino, Jr.

He, however, rued his charges’ lack of maturity in closing out games.

The Lady Red Spikers face the Lady Maroons on Sunday at 4 p.m. while the Lady Blazers will take on the also-ran Lady Altas on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Perpetual bowed out with a 1-5 card and joined San Sebastian (0-6) in the sidelines.

Nieza Viray fired 19 points, Cesca Racraquin hammered in 15 points topped with nine excellent receptions, while Espiritu scored 13 for San Beda.

Hershey Llorente, Razel Aldea and Jhona Rosal combined for Perpetual to claw back from an 11-16 deficit and seize a 19-17 advantage. But they failed to sustain their charge, enabling the Lady Red Spikers to pull through.

Llorente scored 11 points, Rosal added nine while Aldea contributed five to back Cindy Imbo’s 17 points for the Lady Altas.
