Napocor still spilling water from San Roque dam

State-run National Power Corp. on Wednesday announced that it has continued the water spilling operations at the San Roque dam in Pangasinan.

Napocor, in a statement, said water outflow was at 785 cubic meters per second (cms) to bring the water level into its normal high-water level of 280 meters above sea level (masl).

“Current level of dam as of 10 am [Wednesday] is 285.61 masl and we are closely monitoring the inflow and outflow of water in the dam with the San Roque Power Corp.,” said Conrado Sison, head of Napocor’s Dams Management Department.

“We also maintain coordination with the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office for timely advisories for the community,” Sison added.

Napocor said there had been a significant decrease in water elevation to 285.61 masl on Wednesday from 287.18 masl on Tuesday owing to decreased inflow of water to 890 cms from 1342 cms to 890.

Gate openings were also reduced to 4.5 meters (three gates) from 6.5 meters (five gates), it added.

Although there is an improving weather condition in the area, the dam elevation is still high which calls for continuous water discharge from its spillway, Napocor said.

Municipalities along the dam and flood warning zones include San Manuel, San Nicolas, Tayug, Sta. Maria, Villasis, Asingan, Rosales, Alcala, Bayambang and Bautista.

Napocor said it is likewise monitoring the reservoir and the amount of rainfall over Angat watershed in Bulacan.

Angat Dam, which has a normal high-water elevation of 212 masl, has a current level of 205.88 masl.

Napocor manages 22 dams all over the country and conducts a semi-annual inspection on the five major dams in Luzon and seven dams in Mindanao to ensure their integrity and the safety of the people that live downstream of the dams.
