Shipbuilder Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. of Japan is searching for an area in and around Iligan City for its second facility in the Philippines.
“I think we’re good with the deal with Tsuneishi. They’re looking at possible places to build the new facility. Initially, it was Negros (island) but there (were) kinks in the negotiation. They might go to Iligan, then,” said Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez.
Lopez during his recent trip to Japan encouraged Tsuneishi Shipbuilding president Kenji Kawano to locate one of its expanding operations in Iligan to create more jobs in the area of Marawi City.
He also urged shipbuilding companies to team up with the Philippines during a roundtable meeting in Tokyo.
The Pan Hua Group of China, meanwhile, expressed a commitment to pursue a $3.5-billion integrated steel plant project in the Philippines.
Lopez said no less than the chairman of Panhua group called him recently to remind that his company was pursuing the investment plan as soon as possible.
