Manila City Council lauds San Beda U

A Resolution was passed and approved by the Manila City Council “lauding and hailing” the upgrading of the San Beda College to University recently.

Resolution No. 115, principally authored by Councilors Christian Paul Uy and Casimiro Sison, “congratulates the San Beda University, formerly known as San Beda College, for its newly-acquired university status and recognizes the institution’s role as one of the pillars of education in the city and the country since its establishment 117 years ago.”

SBC was established by the Order of St. Benedict along Mendiola Street, San Miguel district, near the presidential Malacañang Palace in 1901.

It has produced, since then, a roster of commendable alumni in the fields of discipline including law and journalism, like incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte, Supreme Court Associate Justice Florenz Regalado, Ombudsman Samuel Martirez, former Senator Rene Saguisag, Manila Standard night editor Honor Blanco Cabie, and former Constitutional Convention delegate from Bulacan Pablo Trillana III.

On Feb. 16 this year, the Commission on Higher Education elevated SBC into a university.

“The City of Manila gives cognizance to the quality of education being provided by the said university – an important component in nation building and an excellent preparation against the challenges of an ever-changing society.” Alderman Uy told the Manila Standard.

Copies of the resolution were given Mayor Joseph Estrada, all 36 members of the council headed by its presiding officer, Vice Mayor Maria Shiela Lacuna, and the rector-president of SBU.
