Ranting again

In my column yesterday I raised doubts about the so-called ceasefire that President Rodrigo Duterte and CBCP President, Archbishop Romulo Valles, supposedly arrived at during their dialogue.

Sure enough, the next day, the President ranted again about religious leaders who use the pulpit to criticize him.

Mr. Duterte even threatened to kill his critics, saying that nobody should impose his views on the Almighty on him.

My gulay, clearly the President cannot make up his mind about God. Is God the one he believes in, the one who is worshipped by Filipinos, or the 16-million Filipinos who voted for him?

I would not want to argue with anyone about God. I find that it is pointless. We cannot even agree on the premises.

This is precisely the reason I raised doubts about that ceasefire. How can you argue about God with someone who is not even sure which God he is referring to?

How can the Catholic Church even agree with Duterte who is pushing for the Reproductive Health Law, or the return of the death penalty?

The President said that nobody could impose his beliefs on him. What a copout!

There are reports that Vice President Leni Robredo has decided to be the opposition’s voice against President Duterte. But he says she cannot do it because she is incompetent.

If there is anything I can agree with the President on, it is the fact that Robredo cannot be that leader who can unite the opposition, much less the country.

It’s a tragedy that we don’t have this kind of leader, whom we can believe in and rally around.

Yes, she is the vice president, but she is incapable of leadership.

How can she ever wage war on illegal drugs, corruption and criminality? Remember, she is identified with the administration of Benigno Aquino III who has been accused of misusing the people’s money.

If there is anything Robredo can be capable of, it is starting the return of the Yellowtards.

There are two provisions in the draft Constitution submitted by the consultative committee that I don’t think will pass through Congress.

They are the provisions on political dynasties and the pork barrel system.

Santa Banana, how d you think many members of Congress got elected to their positions?

Their family names are prominent, and their relatives have ruled their areas for so long.

As for pork barrel—why do you think many aspire to be in Congress even though the pay is measly?

The pork barrel system will continue so long as members of Congress lust for money. I don’t think this will ever change.

President Duterte keeps on saying he wants to step down in 2019 when the new federal constitution is ratified by the people.

He is tired, he says, even as he says he will not step down to see Robredo become leader.

Mr. Duterte did say he would like to see somebody else elected for the transition period.

Just who this would be is anybody’s guess.

This means that whoever is elected president could be reelected under the new Constitution and even reelected until 2030.

True to form, the President’s barker, Harry Roque, gave the administration’s war on drugs a score of 8.5 out of 10 saying the people support it.

Of course, Duterte’s minions will say anything to please their boss. If you ask me, I vote six where the highest is 10.

The President’s was on drugs is misdirected. To him, it’s a peace-and-order problem. I don’t agree because I believe it is an issue of poverty and health.

This is why the problem will not end so long as there is demand.
