Ex-mayor of Labangan charged by Ombudsman

The Office of the Ombudsman has found probable cause to charge an ex-mayor from Zamboanga del Sur with 10 counts of malversation of public funds and 10 counts failure of an accountable officer to render accounts before the Sandiganbayan over a P1.2-million unliquidated fund in 2011.

Former Labangan mayor Wilson Nandang allegedly violated  Articles 217 and 218 of the Revised Penal Code.

From January 2011 to August 2011, Nandang received 10 cash advances amounting to P1,250,000.  

Despite demand from the Commission on Audit, Nandang was not able to liquidate and account for the cash advances.

The Ombudsman asserted under CoA Circular No. 97-002, cash advances for local travels must be liquidated within 30 days upon return to official station.

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman said the Sandiganbayan found La Libertad former mayor Anjanette Sulit of Zamboanga del Norte guilty of failure to render accounts of P92,476.13 in cash advance for travel expenses from July 2, 2010 to Oct. 15, 2012.

She was ordered to pay a P6,000 fine.
