Several employers, schools, and immigration bodies in English speaking countries require applicants to take standardized English tests like IELTS (International English Language Testing System) to get an accurate assessment of a non-native speaker’s English proficiency.
High-stakes exams like IELTS can be seen as a significant challenge. However, there are many ways to prepare for a test of this type.
“Having a positive outlook, the appropriate resources, and enough time for preparation can make the process of taking the test a productive learning experience for test takers,” says British Council assessment specialist Dr. Johanna Motteram.
Dr. Motteram further offers six tips on how to successfully take English language tests, which are also beneficial for those who want to learn how to write and speak in English better.
Know the type of test to take
Dr. Motteram believes it is important to first check the type of test to be taken and learn about the minimum score that an organization requires so a target score can be set. “One way to familiarize yourself with a particular English language test is by knowing what its purpose is, as well as the sections and the type of questions that may show up during the test proper.”
Listen, speak, read, and write in English
According to Dr. Motteram, listening to podcasts can help improve listening ability, while for reading books, magazines, articles, and blogs helps significantly. The best way to improve one’s English in terms of speaking and writing is by communicating with others. “Designate a speaking buddy—a relative, a friend, or another student, and schedule regular speaking sessions with them. For writing, participating in interesting English forums online and being part of those communities can improve one’s English writing ability over time.”
Watch shows with English dialogues
“An individual can learn a lot by regularly watching shows on English-oriented channels like the BBC, CNN, and Bloomberg. English movies and TV series are also great options. Doing so allows the test taker not only enhance their conversational English, but also become familiar with the different English accents, usage, and idioms,” advises Dr. Motteram.
Take a mock test
A mock test allows takers to identify the area of their English language knowledge they need to improve. Numerous review centers in the country provide mock tests for a fee, free sets, on the other hand, are available online. When doing it on one’s own, Dr. Motteram says that self-timing is important. “When timing yourself, remember to pay attention to the time limits and allow yourself to plan and review your answers.”
Attend workshops
Another tip from Dr. Motteram is to attend workshops both online and offline. Online workshops can be done from anywhere and anytime, while offline workshops provide face-to-face training.
Practice daily
For Dr. Motteram, the most effective ways to ace English tests is to make sure one understands the test tasks and timing and to use English every day. “Do the exercises for listening, reading, writing, and speaking consistently. Try the mock tests according to the actual rules of the test.”
